Being a parent is a full-time teaching job. You are teaching them everything from kindness towards others to basic math facts. There are so many important things to learn so they can grow to be thriving, healthy adults. This includes how nutritious foods and good eating habits can help their oral health. Your pediatric dentist is here to add it all up for you so your child has the most beautiful, healthy smile!

Say Cheese

Cheese is a great source of calcium and protein, so it really benefits teeth and bones. It is also low in sugar and carbohydrates, which are the main culprits of causing cavities. Cheddar, Monterey Jack, Swiss, or other aged cheeses are all wonderful choices. You can use small cookie cutters to make fun, appealing shapes from larger blocks of cheese. How many stars can they send to Galaxy Tummy?

Stay Hydrated

Your child most likely enjoys soda and juice, but these options have a tendency to be high in sugar. This wears down tooth enamel, which leaves them susceptible to tooth decay. If they have these beverages occasionally, it’s better to drink them through a straw to minimize contact with their teeth. In addition, help them to choose water more often; it washes away harmful bacteria and keeps them hydrated.

Sweets Are Better Served at Mealtime

Treats are a fun part of a little one’s life but if they are going to have sweets, it’s better if they enjoy them at mealtime. Saliva production elevates during mealtime, at which point it is easier to control acidity in the mouth and reduce damage to the enamel. A piece of cake will be easier on their teeth when eaten right after a nutritious meal rather than alone in the afternoon as a snack.

Keep Snacking in Check

As opposed to the amount of food, this is about the frequency of eating. When there’s plenty of time between when snacks, saliva can wash away food particles that bacteria would try to feed on. This will increase your child’s chances of avoiding cavities.

Suggest Alternatives to Sticky Foods

Sticky treats like taffy, caramel, and granola bars are best saved for occasional eating. Since they stick to your child’s teeth, it is tougher for saliva to get rid of the food particles. If they do eat items like this, brushing afterward becomes even more important. Some great alternatives are apples with peanut butter, grapes, or whole-grain pretzels with cheese.

Bring on the Fruits and Veggies

If kids think fruits and vegetables aren’t very tasty, maybe they haven’t found their favorites yet. Sliced apples, pears, and melons are good choices on the sweeter side. You could also introduce them to carrots and celery with some hummus or another dip you think they’ll enjoy. Avoid offering them dried fruits like raisins, since they are sticky and high in sugar.

There are many ways for your child to eat enjoyable food and take good care of their teeth at the same time. Teaching healthy dental habits is key to ensuring their smile will last a lifetime!
